Cover is black leather with leather, narrow strip threaded into holes. Back tooled with tooling painted on front - same scenes. Central rectangle has white solid sides a top camel with 3 pyramids in background. Other scenes Egyptian - like. 24 pages with CONTENTS: "oiled" tissue between. E. BLACK'S BOOK (airmen), B/W photos of WW2 origin showing airmen (named) and scenes of middle-eastern origin? "African natives"; aircraft; Morotai, many plane painted side emblems; many pen scratches (amusing); family ; William town 1986 reunions of service men (50th, Japan, Tonga, C.H), grandparents 1851.
Looking at images 28/29/30/31/32 and 33 in the album you see L. Black attending a number of 3 Squadron reunions.
Three Squadron was the first RAAF fighter Squadron to leave Australia in WW2 departing Richmond NSW 15/7/1940 for Egypt.

A look at RAAF personnel files show the only L. Black to fit the time line is 15080 Leonard Black DOB 4/10/1904 who enlisted on 13/5/40 . He was married to Mrs Dorothy Black and is shown as having five children Robert 6/9/25, Marjorie 22/8/26, Mary 8/12/29, Leneord 28/6/32, ( possibly misspelt ) and Brian 13/2/39, and they lived at Mascot NSW. Another daughter is added 26/5/43 Barbara May.
His civilian occupation was a driver/mechanic and he served in the RAAF as a fitter/driver motor transport. Len served in North Africa and the Middle East with 3 Squadron and on 28/6/42 was posted back to Australia arriving 7/8/42. His return trip can be seen in images 6/7 and 11.
He remained in Australia until he was posted on 20/10/44 to 79 Squadron (Spitfire) on Morotai where he again served in the transport section
Image 12 is the start of his time on Morotai through to image 21.
Image 17 is out of sequence as it is from north Africa.
He returned to Australia 23/9/45 just after the surrender ceremony on Morotai 9/9/45 which can be seen on image 16 and was discharged 1/10/45 with the rank of Sargent.
The cartoons from image 22 to image 27 are all from north Africa/ middle east. They are annotated with ARM, for Alan Rendall Munro.
Image 34 in the album shows Len and Dorothy celebrating their diamond wedding. They lived in Bathurst after the war before retiring to Cronulla.
The images towards the end of the album are mainly family photos of his later life.
3 Squadron operated Gloster Gladiators from September 1940 to January 1941 when they changed to Hurricanes.
In May 1941 they again changed to P40 Tomahawks until December 1941 when they received the P40 Kittyhawk which they operated for the rest of the campaign in north Africa.
