Pushing the boundaries of all those elements then melding them back together into a structured, suggestive style ultimately presents a contemporary image that is certainly minimalist by nature, yet still manages to capture the life and figurative reality of the subject.
Born in Sydney, I studied painting and drawing full time at East Sydney Art College in the 1960s and thereafter part time for several years. Over the years a successful career in the world of commercial art was forged, which led me on to become Creative Director of Villani's, one of Sydney's leading graphic design groups. In 1987 I resumed part time fine art studies for four years with the Julian Ashton Art College where I studied acrylic painting techniques.
Whilst graphic design has moulded me, my art influences are still wide and varied. From the challenge of nature itself, to the simplicity of landscapes painted by Fred Williams and Jeffrey Smart to the works of my three favourite artists; Edward Hopper, Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud.
In 1991 I resigned my position as Creative Director to paint full time. Since then I have exhibited in a number of solo and group shows, primarily with galleries located in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Other exhibitions have been with galleries in Gosford, Canberra, Byron Bay and Laguna Beach, California, USA. I was also represented for many years, Australia-wide, in the domestic airport lounges of Ansett and the international airport lounges of Qantas, including the Qantas Chairman's Lounges. Five of my paintings were selected for reproduction as limited edition prints and distributed worldwide. A number of my paintings are now in public art collections.
I moved from Sydney in 2005 to Northern NSW and continued exhibiting in solo and group shows in Sydney with Salmon Galleries, NG Art Gallery and in the local area with Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery and the now defunct John Gordon Gallery. In 2007 the inaugural EMSLA presented me with the incentive to revisit the genre of still life painting, thus allowing me the opportunity to utilise my experience in graphic design and my love of simple composition to come to the fore. My winning entry in 2008, "Be still my shopping cart", was an amalgam of my years in graphic design and my passion for painting.Accession Number012.2017Access AdviceFor research purposes only.
