In life we often find ourselves waiting; for loved ones to return home, we wait for decisions, we wait in traffic, we wait to save money.
I started this painting in April 2011 and worked on it between other exhibitions. At the time I had just lost a friend to cancer; he was aged 43. The painting relates to this experience as much of his time leading up to the end was spent waiting.
The meticulous sea shell rabbit stands loyal to the flower arrangement that represents mortality. There are also evaporation lines within the glass jar that mark the passing of time.
Much of my time is spent working and I tend to neglect my domestic environment. It is common in my household to find wilted flowers as I don't have any time to change them. Whilst dealing with serious issues, the painting is also a celebration of our loyal ornaments that we possess and hold to keep us safe.
The painting it constructed in a three coat layering process - additional glazes/coats were applied using black oil. I can demonstrate some of this knowledge to people when I work in the gallery.Accession Number016.2018Credit LineAcquired by Friends of Coffs Harbour Regional GalleryAccess AdviceFor research purposes only.
