CreatorNicholas KachelTitleCalvary IIDate2015MediumOil, graphite & paper on boardDimensionsH. 94cm x W. 98cmArtist StatementA painting of religious themes that uses allegorical motifs to depict the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Calvary, a site immediately outside Jerusalem’s walls. Multiple layers of meanings conceptualised in the creation of artworks are of great interest to the artist. The three motifs reading from left to right across an olive green landscape symbolise the three men crucified on that day in Calvary, and a celebration of the life cycle of Jesus Christ. The white four-pointed star represents the moment of
conception and the entering into this great mystery of life, the central floral motif, a Francium Flower (an invented plant) in blazing full bloom displays the power and importance of Christ’s teachings, and to the right the same plant again shown now at the
end of it’s life cycle and a rejoice in the beauty of its decay. The notions of hope, compassion and the importance of developing inner strength are also imbued in each of these motifs. The black jug balancing on a table top enters the composition as a surreal counterbalance to the landscape, alluding to the unknown pretext of our existential concerns and the precarious balance of life. The painting invites the audience to engage in a ‘vision’ of understanding and, not understanding, and to more importantly seize a moment of change for their lives to develop meaningful and improved outcomes.Accession Number070.2017Access AdviceFor research purposes only.
