CreatorJane Sturrock NashTitlePortrait of Ian IrvineMediumSynthetic polymer paint on masoniteDimensionsH. 153.5cm x W. 110.5cmArtist StatementThe portrait of Ian Irvine was painted on archivally sealed Masonite,
i.e. the Masonite board was sealed with a Matisse gesso, front, back and sides.
Furthermore, diagonal lines were painted on the back to stop it warping. Artist quality acrylic paint was used in the painting process and when finished, the surface was varnished with a compatible satin finish varnish.
The artist has used many different types of brushes to create a type of calligraphy rendition of Ian's face for 2 main reasons:
- The brush strokes represent words and a type of mapping of Ian's face and character.
- Jane is highly proficient in the use of brushes as she drew with brushes on her ceramic ware over 17 years and has always felt at home using the dialogue of lines for expressing herself, whether in underglaze, paint, pencil or charcoal.
Jane has been a practising artist for over 35 years and has had many exhibitions in Sydney, either in ceramics or painting (mainly at the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Barry Stern's Gallery, Paddington).
The last portrait commission was of Professor Brian Seppelt, who was the first head of Austin College in Armidale. The portrait hangs in the main dining hall of the college.Accession Number145.2018Credit LineDonation by artist - Jane Sturrock NashAccess AdviceFor research purposes only.
