- The 'Living Conditions'

The Elders shared their stories from the past with thirty Aboriginal youth from local high schools. Through two art and storytelling workshops, with both the Elders and Aboriginal artists as mentors, a fourth story was identified, inspired by the young people who wanted to share their vision for 'The Future'. A total of thirty works were created. From this, five outstanding artworks were selected to reflect the stories of the 'Old Camp' as seen by the Gumbaynggirr Elders, and 'The Future' as imagined by our youth. This art initiative allowed for a modern interpretation of traditional stories and yarns to be shared between generations, and now captured in the two inspired designs you see here today.

The Tap - Dallas Torrens (Orara High School): Fellas came down to the waterhole to drink water, catch fish and other creatures for food. The dolphin is our totem for Gumbaynggirr people of this area. The introduction of the tap into the 'Old Camp' changed the lifestyle of the people living there.

Living Conditions - Jessika Sandry (Toormina High School): A family meeting with food sources around them, which is the fish, stingray and turtle; the dolphin, which is a totem of the Gumbaynggirr people, and the gecko which are a good food source too.

Waterhole (Water Spirit) - Mikaela Brown-Hickson (Coffs Harbour High School): This image depicts the water spirit and the waterhole at the 'Old Camp', showing the people's strong connection to this place, the waterhole was their life source.

Living Conditions - Tyrahn Vorhauer-Craig (Coffs Harbour High School): This image depicts the living conditions at the 'Old Camp', with family sitting around the campfire and the humpies where the family lived.

The Future (Family Connections) - Jonah Blackburn (Bishop Druitt College): One tribe expanded out through generations, leading to today's tribe, many of them know each other and others don't.Specific Place^[1]Accession Number108.2018Access AdviceFor research purposes only. Description

Two metal cut-out panels mounted on brick walls, located on either side of the Community and Sports Building at the site of the Old Camp, Yaam Nguura Jalumgal, also known as Fitzroy Oval. LED lighting strips are located behind the artworks at the top and bottom edges of each.
