Description

Guide Ben Holder at Emerald Beach in 1981.

The SS Keilawarra collision was one of NSW's worst peacetime tragedies. It was sunk in a collision with a smaller vessel, the "Helen Nicoll", on the night of 8 December 1886.

After the Court of Marine Inquiry was held, it became compulsory for all NSW Steamers to carry lifeboats and lifebelts for all on board.
