Description

On the nose of the plane is a picture of a boomerang and underneath is the word "BOOMERANG".

This is the early version of the Kittyhawk, showing a round air intake on top of the nose with a 50cal machine gun on either side of it. It also has 303 machine guns in each wing.

(The P40 Kittyhawk has an oval shape air intake on the top of the nose with no machine guns on the nose. It had machine guns only in the wings.) The Curtiss P40 was called Tomahawk and Kittyhawk by the British Commonwealth and Russian air forces. The Americans called both models the Curtiss P40 Warhawk. With the Boomerang name this is probably a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) plane so it would be in the Middle East or north Africa. This is the only area the RAAF used the Tomahawk. They were operated by RAAF 3 Squadron and RAAF 450 Squadron as part of the Desert Air Force.

3 Squadron received Tomahawks in May / June 1941 for the campaign against the Vichy French in Syria Lebanon then after that used them in North Africa.
