From Far West to Grand Finals
Leslie Ryan’s nickname was Bandy as a child, due to his “bandy legs.” Bandy legs (or bow legs) are a deformity, often caused by rickets or Blount’s disease, which causes a person’s knees to remain far apart even when the ankles are held close together. Doctors had told Leslie’s parents that because of this condition, he’d never play sport.
When Leslie’s older brothers and sisters played in their front yard, Leslie would sit outside and watch them. One day, Mrs Betty Trustum, Far West’s local Welfare Officer, walked past the Ryan house and saw three-year-old Leslie sitting in the yard. She introduced herself to Leslie’s mother, Joyce, and explained how Far West could repair Leslie’s legs.
Leslie spent two years travelling back and forth from Far West for his treatment. His older siblings would help pack his suitcase with toys and popcorn. He remembers little of his time at Far West other than the lift, rocking chairs and table with a footrest. But his older sister Barbara recalls how excited the siblings were when Leslie returned, and how it was her job to polish Leslie’s calipers and strap them on his legs, inserting their hooks into his boot heels each day.
By the time Leslie started kindergarten he no longer required the use of calipers. His legs had completely healed and he was able to enjoy playing soccer. Unfortunately, his soccer days were short-lived due to a broken toe. But a determined Leslie took up rugby league instead, going on to play several rugby league grand finals for both Coffs Harbour and Bellingen clubs. He later undertook two years’ of national service. Leslie still exercises every day by taking hour-long walks on his sturdy, straight legs.
