Description
Shipping record for Coffs Harbour, 1943. Written in Woods' Australian Diary, No. 22. It records daily weather for Coffs Harbour, and notes when ships berth, what goods are loaded onto them, and what time they leave the Harbour. This diary also records four torpedo attacks by Japanese submarines on Allied ships off the coast. They are:
29 April 1943: The Wollongbar torpedoed off Crescent Head
5 May 1943: Ship in the Fingal convoy torpedoed 20 miles east south east of Coffs, and was visible from the Harbour
12 May 1943: The Ormiston torpedoed south east Solitary, and was anchored off Muttonbird Island for repairs
16 June 1943: The Portmar is torpedoed and sunk 80 miles to the south east.
This final incident saw 87 survivors brought to Coffs Harbour. The seriously wounded were taken to the local hospital, and other survivors were housed at the Coffs Harbour High School's assembly hall for the night.
