Description
Black and white photograph depicting signage at Karangi Dam. The sign is behind a wire mesh panel. It shows a map, technical details of the map and an information panel. The panel reads: "Karangi Dam was constructed by the New South Wales Public Works Department for the Coffs Harbour Shire Council to meet the needs of Coffs Harbour, Sawtell, and the coastal strip north of Coffs Harbour including Woolgoolga. Construction of the dam was completed in 1980.
The dam is an off-creek storage being filled by pumping from the Orara River at Cochrane's Pool which is approx. 1 Km West of the dam.
The purpose of the dam is to store sufficient water to meet the area demands:
1. In dry periods when there is insufficient flow in the Orara River or
2. When the river water becomes excessively turbid during flood times"
