Shipbuilders, Port Glasgow, Scotland for the North Coast Steam Navigation Co. Ltd, Sydney NSW and was named after the town of Uki in the Tweed area. The company for a period of time had a monopoly on Northern Rivers services carrying supplies, general merchandise including timber, mail and passengers. The steamer was requisitioned between 1939 and 1944 by the RAN as a minesweeper during the Second World War to maintain a clear channel of 25nm off the NSW coast.
