This publication discusses the naming of the town (p.10): "John Korff came in 1847. He brought a cargo of goods and six pairs of cedar sawyers but, being unable to cross the Bellinger bar, he ran along to the shelter of the south island at the local harbour where he sheltered for several days before returning to the Bellinger. On his return to Sydney he reported to the 'proper authorities' that the port which he had called Korff's Harbour, gave safe shelter to sailing ships in a southerly gale.

For some years the harbour was called Korff's Harbour. However when surveyor Greaves made a detailed survey in 1861, he called it Coff's Harbour. John Korff was often called, much to his annoyance, 'Mr. Koff'. He angrily retorted with a spelling of the name and pronounced it Korff. It is possible that the name was pronounced 'Koff' and spelt 'Coff' by the surveyor's clerk when the land around the harbour was reserved in 1861."

Note that the spelling of Walter Harvie's surname is incorrect throughout the work. 

The Coffs Harbour Rotary Club commissioned the President of the Coffs Harbour Historical Society, Mr George England, to write a history of the district.

It was designed and illustrated by Robert A. Walter. Copies of negatives and photographs were prepared by John Rotar, who worked for the newspaper company.
