Significance Statement
Ray Hughes, an idiosyncratic Sydney Art Dealer represented Joe Furlonger and was also, as so often happens with artists and dealers a good friend. Ray was in Paris in 2005 and went to a circus where he was enchanted by the horsemanship. At that time, Joe was in Berlin working.
Ray called Joe and told him to come to Paris and do some circus paintings. This work was one of the results. It was exhibited in Sydney in 2005. (Philip Theobald — 2021)
Description
Painting of a figure in black with two white horses in the yellow foreground, red background. Appears that the figure is atop one of the horses in a ring or arena.
The painting is in an abstract style with gestural mark making, minimal detail and lots of layers.
