Significance Statement
Bronwyn was a student at Kelvin Grove CAE and Davida was one of her teachers. They were of a similar age, about twice that of the other students and became friends. This picture captures the conflict of a mother who seeks to balance her dual lives of motherhood and artist teacher. The child is depicted as holy, almost escaping from her mother's arms while mother looks out to the world while ensuring her child cannot escape.
It reminds me of many holy pictures except that Jesus is usually depicted as a chubby well behaved child, an image I have always doubted. I find Davida's dilemma and the child with halo and out stretched arms more believable. (Philip Theobald — 2021)
