Tony Hart's artistic journey began with the creation of mook mooks, small clay discs he made and sold as a child in Coffs Harbour under the mentorship of art teacher Tony La Spina and Aunty Grace Roberts.
In the early 1970s, at around 17 or 18 years old, Tony became determined to acquire a new surfboard featuring a red and yellow Lightning Bolt design, inspired by the iconic designs he had seen in surf films, particularly those featuring Gerry Lopez.
To raise the $80 needed for the board,Tony began making mook mooks - sold for 20 cents to a dollar each. Within just one week, Tony crafted over 1,000 mook mooks, raising enough money to purchase the surfboard.
Tony's connection to the ocean, Gumbaynggirr heritage, and love of Country has influenced his ceramics, paintings, and sculptures; defining his creative voice.
