Description
Device for dipping banana boxes into fungicide. After packing the bananas into boxes and attaching the lid, the box is dipped into a Shirlain bath in the dip tank which sat at the base. Used on the Pike farm.
Dipping for “squirter” and “black end” became compulsory in August 1948 (Yeates, Vol. II, p.58) and prevented rot which could occur from breaking hands into single bananas.
Today hygiene and hand packing and rapid supply lines has largely replaced fungicide usage.
