Description
Tar pot used by Dorrigo Shire Council work gang. Tar, or pitch, came in blocks and was melted to use on bolts and cracks on bridges, the jetty and other structures. The tar was melted over a fire, in this pot.
John Pike Snr, known as Jack, was David’s grandfather and established the banana farm at 353 Coramba Road. Jack was also the ganger, or foreman, of the Council gang of labourers who built and mended roads, footpaths and other tasks. Jack retired from this position in April 1946 after nearly 30 years with the Shire Council (Yeates Vol. II, p.97). He initially worked on the railway as it came up the coast, working on the tunnels on the line north of Coffs Harbour. He left the railways when the North Coast line was completed in 1922. He moved his house, reputedly the post office at Coffs Heights, to the farm at 353 Coramba Road.
