Robert and Joseph Hunter were in the Bellingen area when land in the Orara Valley was thrown open for Selection after the cedar getters had finished harvesting the cedar trees in the area. 

The first settlers started arriving in 1886 and by 1900 the majority of the best land had been taken up, for example on Dairyville Road alone, at least 18 families were established.
