Description
A Willow brand meat safe, sometimes also called a kitchen safe, made from metal. The top and base of the safe are green in colour and solid, while the four sides are a yellow-cream colour and have numerous small holes. The holes are small enough to stop insects from getting into the safe but large enough to allow air to flow through to help keep the meat cool. The wire rack inside the safe allowed air to flow freely around the meat. There is a hanging hook on top of the meat safe as they were usually hung on verandahs or in a shady spot under a tree. Shallow trenches surround each foot and also the hanging hook. These trenches were filled with water to stop ants from climbing into the safe especially if it was positioned on a bench rather than hung.
