On July 19, 1841, the Sydney Herald reported that Crown Lands Commissioner Oakes and a party of police had pursued and slaughtered a group of Gumbaynggirr people. The number of people killed is unknown. Mounted police entered the camp at Blackadder Creek and started shooting, then pursued the survivors to the Corindi River and ultimately drove them off the headland at Red Rock. Gumbaynggirr people today were told about the massacre by their grandparents and have erected a memorial on Red Rock headland.

In memory of the victims and survivors of the Blood Rock massacres. Understanding their sacrifice will make us stronger.

We as Gumbaingirr people have survived many conflicts over ownership of our traditional lands, including a massacre where many were driven off the headland at Red Rock (Blood Rock).

Gumbaingirr descendants, especially women, still avoid this headland. The significance of this place and the rebirthing of our culture will never be forgotten.
