Iron ballast c. 1770
These particles are from the surface of iron ballast jettisoned from the bark H.M. Endeavour on June 12, 1770 under the command of Lieutenant James Cook.
Presented to the museum in August 2000 by the visiting commander of the replica Endeavour.
Description
Ballast from HM Bark Endeavour, captained by Lieutenant James Cook, who sailed past Coffs Harbour in May 1770 and named the Solitary Islands.
Concretion accompanied by plaque which reads:
This concretion if from the surface of iron ballast jettisoned from H.M. Bark Endeavour on the 12th June 1770

Commanding Officer
The ship was built in Whitby, England, in 1764 and refitted for Cook's expedition of 1769-1771. It was decommissioned in September 1774 and scuttled in 1778.
Concretion and plaque encased in resin block with red baize base. Block sits in wooden presentation case, padded with purple cloth; outer is a textured copper coloured surface; hinged lid with clip closure.
