Rob Mutton, with his wife Aileen, owned, developed and ran the zoo just north of Moonee from 1968 to c.1978. (Following the sale, Rob stayed on as manager for a time.) In their time it was called ‘Kumbaingeri Wildlife Sanctuary’ but known to them as just Kumbaingeri or ‘the Zoo’. After they sold, it was renamed Coffs Harbour Zoo. The interview was conducted to continue the history-telling of Coffs Harbour through the dynamic growth years of the 1970s and 1980s. Rob started the zoo at the same time as Hec Goodall arrived in Coffs Harbour to establish the Pet Porpoise Pool. Together with the Big Banana, they were amongst the first tourist attractions in Coffs Harbour, at the beginning of the tourist and new settler boom.
