They had sliced into a part of Gija Country without hesitation and then fled swiftly. The miner’s detritus was scattered across the scene of the crime, leaving behind that distinct mix of entitlement and fear that characterises the settler-colonist. Colonial dreams of “developing the north” violently fractured the ground here, but also life — homes, hearts and bodies. Breath. Despite overwhelming evidence the government chose not to prosecute the miners. STILL: National Still Life Award is the signature event of the Yarrila Arts and Museum exhibition program and a biennial, acquisitive award for works in the still life genre, in all media, open to artists at all stages of their career.
