In his first two years in England, he experimented with abstract painting influenced by artists such as Nicolas De Stael, William Scott, Ben Nicholson and others.
‘Untitled’ (1964) is an example of this early interest in abstraction. Coleing’s experimentation with abstraction lasted for a few years but it didn’t sustain his interest.
A lot of the works created in London were destroyed, especially the larger works, before Coleing returned to Australia in 1967. There are some photographic records from this period, however, ‘Untitled’ (1964) is one of a small number of paintings that Coleing brought back to Australia.Accession NumberG2024.9.1Access AdviceFor research purposes only.
