In 1974, following the birth of his son, Coleing moved back to the cottage at Arakoon and built a studio on the neighbouring block.
Many of the artworks created over the next few years incorporated elements from the natural environment including trees, clouds, birds, the ocean etc as well as leisure activities such as fishing or surfing. It was during this period that Coleing developed his ideas for public sculptures inspired by clouds, plants etc.
‘Man with Extension’ (1974) is an early example of a theme that has continued throughout Coleing’s art practice. The idea that humans may develop ‘extensions’ when using items every day. In this work it is a fishing rod, in later works the extensions included mobile phones.Accession NumberG2024.9.5Access AdviceFor research purposes only.
