Coleing was inspired to create this work in reaction to the increasing problem of pollution at the iconic Bondi Beach. Like many locals in the 1980s, Coleing suffered a number of ear and throat infections after swimming and surfing at Bondi Beach. These infections were caused by raw sewerage being pumped into the ocean close to shore.
‘Venus de Bondi’ was an expression of the public disgust that ultimately led to action being taken to address this pollution and the problem being solved by the extension and improvement of the sewerage pipes that reduced the health and aesthetic issues in one move.Accession NumberG2024.9.12Access AdviceFor research purposes only.
