History
An exhibition of farm produce held on 'Cochrane's Flat' on the 2nd October, 1925 proved so successful that the committee decided to form an agricultural and horticultural society. The first show was held on the 3rd and 4th of November, 1926, on ground belonging to the Porter Estate. (Now the sports ground). As the years passed it was felt necessary to purchase the ground in order that improvements could be made. A Queen Competition was held and £ 725 ($1,450) was raised, a difference of 1 /6 (15c) in the results of the two candidates, Mrs. Nellie Cowling and Miss L. Ingram. The show was held annually and exhibitions were regarded as being the best in the district. The last Show was held on the 24th and 25th of February, 1938.
A branch of the Junior Farmers Club was formed in 1938. The age limit was 1 O to 21 years, later changed to 25. They were assisted by senior honorary advisers. Two successful shows were held one in 1946 and one in 1948. Club members held field days and attended district field days. The name has now been changed to Rural Youth.
