A cylindrical cardboard matchbox containing 37 unstruck wooden matches. The lid of the small cylinder slides on and off. There is a sandpaper striking surface on the base of the cylinder. The outside of the cylinder has a plaid-like pattern on it which has been worn off the cardboard's surface in numerous places. The flat top of the cylinder lid has the words "Monterey Food Products" (red text on a black background), and also the "M" logo of Monterey and the numbers 2/3 in a tiny circle.
The Bailey family were agents for Monterey throughout NSW 1936-1938 and had a chain of regional stores including one in Coffs Harbour. The complimentary matchboxes sat on the store counter and acted as promotional material for the store's products.
