Significance Statement
Robert Moore is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist based in the Clarence Valley of Northern New South Wales known for his vibrant, expressive works that span painting, sculpture, and graphic design. He is also well-known for his long-standing contribution to the iconic Australian surfwear brand Mambo as one of the original artists.
I Like Small Waves invites viewers to contemplate the subtle beauty of the everyday coastal landscape. Blending typography and abstract geometry, the piece articulates Moore’s personal philosophy of finding contentment in the serene, gentle waves he encounters at Yuraygir National Park. Moore regularly spends time in Yuraygir National Park and both the ocean and hinterland are direct influences for his work. Making initial sketches from the coastal sand dunes, Moore has previously stated ‘I want to respond to that; to say how that makes me feel.’
This artwork was featured in Yarrila Arts and Museum’s Swell Chasers: Surf Stories from the Mid North Coast exhibition which celebrated the unique surf culture of the region through social and cultural history and the work of contemporary artists.
