Description
A cream-coloured thick paper card printed in black. The sheet of paper used has been folded twice to create the card. On the cover is a sketch of a river and bush scene entitled "An Australian Backwater" and signed in the bottom right corner Douglas Pratt(?). Inside the card on both pages is a montage of sketches of army men in action with the printed text, "May Christmas bring you Happiness and may each day of the New Year bring you joy" on the left side and "Australian Military Forces" on the right.
On the back cover of the card in the bottom right corner is the small trademark symbol of the printing company, John Sands Pty Ltd.
When the card is fully opened up there is a handwritten letter in black ink from D. McL. Watt (David McLaren Watt) to the Secretary of the Ladies Comfort Club in Orara, thanking them for their Christmas greetings and present.
John Sands Pty Ltd was a major Australian printer, engraver, and publisher based in Sydney, NSW. Founded by English immigrant John Sands in 1837, the firm became a cornerstone of Australian stationery, mapping, and board game printing (including the Australian edition of Monopoly).
The John Sands trademark is based on the old printers' tradition of punning pictorially on the name of the founder. It depicts an hourglass (alluding to the "Sands" of time) with the letters "J" and "S" positioned either inside the glass or flanking the instrument and was widely and consistently stamped on their commercial printing, maps, and greeting cards well into the 1930s and 1940s.
