Recipe Book

Like all family cookbooks, this one also includes other information. The inside cover is used to keep a daily tally of eggs laid on the island. This book was owned by the Tulk family.

Description

Cookbook made by Jessie Tulk, the wife of the lighthouse keeper on South Solitary Island in the 1930s. It includes a mix of handwritten recipes and recipes cut from magazines. Most of them are for desserts, cakes or puddings. Jessie recorded the number of eggs laid by the Island's hens on the inside front cover of the book. The cover is made of cardboard and is decorated with diagonal green and blue stripes, and the phrase: 'Gem Exercise Book No. 30'. Handwritten on the cover is: 'Tulk' and 'Solitary Island'. The spine is made of brown cloth.
