Bucca Honour Roll

This Honour Roll was originally housed in the Lower Bucca Hall. The hall was demolished in 1983. The Honour Roll was presented by Miss Joyce Herd, of Lower Bucca, a granddaughter of Mrs John Herd Senior, who unveiled the Honour Roll in 1919. It was erected in the Bucca School of Arts in April 1919, money for the board being raised by the Bucca Win-the-War League.

The Honour Board was designed and made by Mr A.W. Fowler, a Boer War veteran of Korora. It is composed of Silky Oak and Queensland maple, in the canopy style. The silhouette panel near the top, depicts 15 figures of Allied soldiers in marching kit. Of the 3 panels of names, those on the centre panel were killed. Plaques on either side show a soldier and sailor with the flag, while in the centre Britannia, in double plaque, holds a laurel wreath over the fallen heroes.

Honour board to commemorate the soldiers from Upper Bucca who enlisted in World War I. Made of silky oak and Queensland maple, the Moorish inspired design peaks with 1919 at the top. This is followed by a silhouetted panel depicting 15 Allied soldiers in marching kit, below which is fret work around the words "Their names liveth forever". The body of the board consists of four turned pillars separating 3 arched panels inscribed with the names of 30 soldiers. Frames for photographs of the soldiers appear before each name. Above the central panel is a figure of Britannia holding a laurel wreath over those soldiers who have fallen. She is flanked on the side panels by emblems of the army and navy. At the bottom of the board are the words "In grateful remembrance of our heroes" outlined in silver and gold. The board was made by A.W. Fowler whose son Edgar Fowler died in France during the war. Inscriptions are by Mr I. Sealby.
