Jack Ladd was born in Sydney. When he left school, he worked on a baker's delivery cart in Campsie, Canterbury and Belmore. Jack moved to Coffs Harbour in 1945 to work as a truck driver for his brother-in-law Vic Lindsay. He later owned a banana plantation in Middle Boambee.
