Jack Gerard grew up in Nana Glen. He became involved in entertainment at a young age and worked with Lawrence Penn.

In 1920 Jack moved to Coffs Harbour arriving with a horse and cart. He showed silent movies in the School of Arts and became part owner with Lawrence Penn in the beautiful Tasma Picture Theatre between 1937 and 1968.
