Mercury Cleaning Kit
South Solitary Island’s lighthouse lantern comprised of a stationary oil burner, with eight cut glass prisms that revolved around it, throwing out eight flashes at once, which were visible twenty nautical miles to sea. The glass prisms floated in a mercury bath. One of the lightkeepers’ jobs was to clean the mercury by filtering it using this scoop and sieved funnel.
