Still: National Still Life Award is a highlight of our gallery’s program - an Australia-wide award for artworks in the genre of still life, in all mediums, held every two years.

In 2019, 59 works have been selected from a record number of entries from all over Australia, by artists at varying stages of their careers. Fourteen are regional artists from an area stretching from the Northern Rivers to Port Macquarie and eight have been Still finalists before. The winning entry becomes part of the gallery’s collection.

The judge for the 2019 award is the highly respected Director of Shepparton Art Museum, Rebecca Coates. Hamish Sawyer, curator, Caloundra Regional Gallery, Lisa Paulsen, Sydney art collector and former board member of the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery co-ordinator, Cath Fogarty and curator, Jo Besley shortlisted the finalists.

Traditional still life themes of mortality and the passage of time are re-interpreted to explore contemporary issues such as consumption, extinction, addiction, environmental degradation and technological obsolescence. Artists also play with still life conventions such with realism, illusion and materiality to encourage us to contemplate just how we look and what we see when we encounter art.
